What Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?

There are two types of hardwood flooring: solid and engineered.

Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood look exactly alike. Looks can be deceiving, though, because the two perform very differently. Learn more about each hardwood flooring type:

  • Solid hardwood flooring is a traditional style of wood floors where each plank is made from a single, solid piece of wood. Each plank is typically ¾ inch thick and made entirely of hardwood. Since it’s completely solid throughout, you can sand and refinish your solid hardwood floors to meet your changing style needs. This eliminates scratches, stains, dents, and other imperfections. While solid hardwood is a beautiful floor, it can warp in humid or moisture-prone environments. Due to this, we recommend installing your solid hardwood flooring in above-grade and non-moisture-prone rooms.
  • Engineered hardwood flooring is created from laminated wooden layers. This design adds stability and prevents the wood from warping from moisture and humidity exposure. A natural hardwood veneer at the surface, meaning engineered and solid hardwood look identical from above. This type of hardwood is more affordable and durable. The only downside to engineered hardwood is you can’t usually sand and refinish as often as solid wood. This depends on the quality and thickness of its top layer.

Where Can I Install Hardwood Flooring?

Hardwood isn’t the best choice for rooms prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, but options are suitable for the remainder of your home or business.

Solid hardwood, for example, works best in quiet, dry rooms. It can be installed in above-grade spaces and is the perfect hardwood flooring type for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.

Engineered hardwood is a newer option built from up to seven layers of natural wood. Unlike its solid counterpart, engineered hardwood can resist moisture and be installed below grade. This type of hardwood is great for basements and mudrooms, but it can also be installed throughout your entire home for an extra layer of protection against moisture.

Can I Install My Own Hardwood Floors?

In most cases, we don’t recommend it! Why? Hardwood installation is a very tricky process that requires careful measurements, specific tools, and attention to detail.  The process is physically grueling and involves plenty of time spent on your knees, and novices can easily make mistakes.

Additionally, your product warranty or local building codes might require you to hire professional flooring installers for your hardwood project.
